Super Bowl XX

Super Bowl XX happened on January 26, 1986. The Super Bowl XX was held in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Louisiana Superdome. It featured the teams who bested the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The AFC Champions were the New England Patriots and the NFC Champions were the Chicago Bears. Who won Superbowl 20th? The Bears was the better side and went on to become the Superbowl 20 champions by beating the "Cinderella" Patriots 46 to 10.

Each Super Bowl 20 teams paved a different road before they could reach the championship game. Before the Superbowl 20, the New England Patriots struggled in their season as they registered continuous losses in the beginning of the season. However, they managed to get back into the bid as they won in the later half of the season. With this performance they became the wild card and played all their post season games away, only to surprise all the favorites. No one expected them to be at the Super Bowl but they manage to advance at the expense of the Miami Dolphins, the team who gave the Bears their only loss.

On the other hand, the Chicago Bears were having a season fit for a Super Bowl appearance. The team only lost once in their regular season (to the Miami Dolphins) and they set a record of registering two shutouts in the playoffs (New York Giants and LA Rams). The team during that season is known for their stingy defense led by their linebacker Mike Singletary, who became the Defensive player of the year. Their offense also featured a colorful and effective quarterback, Jim McMahon. Their defensive stats are astronomical as they lead the league in almost all major categories of a defensive squad. They hold the fewest points allowed, rushing yards allowed, and total yards allowed. The offense was also exceptional as they lead the rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

From the very start, New England had a very rough game in facing the Bears. The Bears sacked their quarterback a total of seven times – one of the many notable Superbowl 20 stats (and a Super Bowl record). In fact, New England’s rushing yards was a -19 in the first half. Instead of advancing towards the field goal, they were being pushed back by the strong and commanding Bears.

In the end, the Bears had it. The final score was 46-10, ending the Cinderella season of the Patriots and winning it all by superb offense and an almost perfect defense.
