Super Bowl I

Super Bowl I is the result of the agreement between the National Football League and the American Football League to let their champions face each other to what was also called the AFL-NFL Championship game. What team won the first Super Bowl? It was the Green Bay Packers when they bested the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.

Green Bay replicated their performance of the first Super Bowl by defeating the Oakland Raiders 33-14. Bart Starr was the MVP of Super Bowl 1 and 2. The Green Bay Packers, who won the first Super Bowl, was undoubtedly the best team in the league. They had the legendary coach, Vince Lombardi, at the helm. The first Super Bowl played featured this team that many regarded as the best team ever assembled.

When was the first super bowl played? The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967. The timing of the Super Bowl is kept alive until today with the deviation from the original schedule only 2-3 weeks off. The first Superbowl was played in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California.

The name Super Bowl 1 was not really the name used by the organizers of the game. Only the media who was covering the game called it “Super Bowl”. Because of the hype and the reaction of the audience in Super Bowl 1, the name, “Super Bowl” was used when the merger of the NFL and AFL was finalized. The irony in this media frenzy of the first Superbowl came from the media themselves. Up until now, there is no known complete coverage of the Super Bowl I. The networks that covered the 1st Super Bowl run over the tapes and are forever lost in their side. One of the surviving images of the 1st Superbowl is that of the opening touchdown by Max Mcgee.

Superbowl 1 became the benchmark of many future Superbowls in American Football. Except for the media coverage, information about the Superbowl I can still be considered at par with today's information regarding other Super Bowls. Play-by-play accounts can still be read online and the small video of Max Mcgee can still be seen. Even the names of the referees are still available.

Another influence of the Super Bowl I is the trophy for the future Super Bowl winners. The winner of the Super Bowl is awarded the Vince Lombardi trophy. Vince Lombardi was the coach of the winning team of the Super Bowl I – Green Bay Packers. His road to greatness became eminent when he took over a losing team and developed them to be one of the best team ever assembled.
