The Miami Dolphins became a member of the American Football League in the year 1966, and they joined the NFL by way of merger in 1970. The next chapter of the franchise was no less remarkable as Shula brought quarterback Dan Marino to the Dolphins during the 1982 season. Marino became the Rookie of the Year with a sensational performance that paved the way for some of the most dramatic performances in NFL history. Marino led the team to a total of two Super Bowl appearances (XVII and XIX). However, with all the passing records he set with the Miami Dolphins, Marino was not able to win a Super Bowl. After the Marino era, the team made the playoffs five more times, and their latest appearance was in 2001. Ever since then, the Dolphins have been struggling to put together a team of substance.
